Short answer
Right-click the scythe in your hotbar to equip it, then left-click a grass clump. Eastshade Studios gives this equip-then-target sequence in its launch-week reply to a player whose scythe would not work.
Where to buy a scythe
A player in “Twigs and cut grass” points to the woman selling seeds at the market. The existing Demo footage also shows a scythe offered at the seed shop, but its old price is not a verified launch price. Check the current shop listing before buying.

Grass and dead trees use different tools. Use the scythe for grass; for dead farm trees, follow the Chant of the Woodcutters guide.
Cut grass and check the result
- Put the scythe in reach in your hotbar.Right-click its slot to equip it. Owning it is not the same as selecting it.
- Target an individual grass clump.Left-click the grass, rather than right-clicking it as if you were equipping an item.
- Check that the chosen clump is cut.If it remains, recheck the equipped tool and target before clearing a larger area.
The developer’s reply confirms the tool-selection sequence. A player in the same thread says the tool also needs mana; however, the original poster already had full mana, so low mana did not explain that case.
These are keyboard-and-mouse controls. The thread does not provide a controller equivalent or establish a fix for every unresponsive target.
Why cranberry seeds will not plant in the pond
Do not try to make an ordinary tilled plot in the water. Two players answering “How to plant cranberry seeds” describe planting at specific points around the pond’s inner edge after clearing the surrounding bushes.
- Use the scythe to clear the obstructing growth around the pond.
- Select the cranberry seeds and move near or into the pond.
- Move along the inner edge until a small water-circle indicator appears. One player found that the indicator appeared slightly below the planting spot.
- Press Space at the indicated spot to plant. If no indicator appears, reposition along the edge instead of repeatedly tilling the water.
The first reply also says to harvest pond crops with the scythe. This is community guidance; we have not independently checked growth time, yield or every planting position.
For ordinary basil seeds and small soil plots, return to the first garden walkthrough.
